“BROKEN TRUST”

EPISODE 43 – BROTHER'S WORRY

BY: LYSSA THORNE

SUPER: Reincarnation can be great. You can start anew. All the memories wiped clean. Until you wake up and all the forgotten memories slam you. In the beginning, I went by the name Sannaro. That was only half of the problem.

FADE IN:

INT. KUMANI SANNARO'S APARTMENT

Sannaro of the Astrisi nomadic ship the Kumani returned from a busy day commanding the defense force and sank happily into his favorite chair in his apartment. He pulled off his boots and stretched his toes.

He reached his telepathy out to his mate and caressed her mind.

SANNARO'S PSYCHIC VISION

He received an image of walking down the hallway he'd just walked through.

BACK TO APARTMENT

The door swept open again and she lazily walked over to him with hips swaying alluringly in her skin tight black and white flight suit.

She chuckled and put a hand through her shoulder-length honey-blond hair.

CHERNA

I was right behind you. Were you that impatient for me to come home?

He reached his arms around her slender waist and drew her to him.

SANNARO

I'm always looking forward to being with you.

The door swept open again and their two preteen children entered together.

ANDOKU

Oh no, they're at it again.

AMBRIKA

Oh you just don't understand.

CHERNA

I need to make dinner, anyway.

She pulled away and turned toward the kitchen.

Sannaro grabbed her arm and twirled her back to him. He stood up, embraced her and kissed her deeply.

She melted against him farther into the kiss.

After a few seconds, he drew back.

SANNARO

That's for a job well done today, Assistant Senior Vizha'e.

CHERNA

Why thank you, Senior Vizha'e. I always look forward to your awards and I'll give you more of my appreciation later tonight.

She swept her finger along the outer point of his ear.

He shivered in anticipation as his body became electrified from her erotic touch.

ANDOKU

Oh, this is too embarrassing.

Andoku rushed to the bathroom to wash off the potters clay that still clung to his hands.

AMBRIKA

Someday, I hope my husband will be so wonderful to return to in the evening when I'm old enough to marry.

SANNARO

Do you have homework tonight, Ambri?

AMBRIKA

I have to study for a big test.

SANNARO

Why don't you do that while your mother's making dinner?

AMBRIKA

All right.

Ambrika walked into her bedroom just as Andoku reemerged from the bathroom.

ANDOKU

Dad, I made a striking vase today. It's going to be green with teal swirls once the glaze is fired. Grandmother Adara thinks it'll fetch a nice price at the next bazaar.

SANNARO

Glad to hear it, Andu. At least you can use a pottery wheel. Your grandmother wouldn't let me get near one. She was afraid I'd spatter the clay all over the whole industrial area.

ANDOKU

Adara tells me about your attempts at the finer arts of ceramics.

SANNARO

At least I did hand craft a model of a Vizha'i!

Sannaro pointed to the old ceramic model on the shelf above the living room computer. Andoku patted him on the shoulder.

ANDOKU

Yeah, Dad, you did all right.

SANNARO

You're teasing me.

ANDOKU

Dad, you're a warrior, not a potter.

SANNARO

You're right. As for reminding me I'm a warrior, I need to stow my laser pistol.

He went into the kitchen to where Cherna was putting a pot of water on to boil. He put his arms around her thigh and released that strap, then encircled her waist and drew her pistol belt from around her waist.

She pecked him on the cheek.

He shouldered her belt and went into their room to the lock box. He opened it and set her belt inside, then took his own off and laid it beside hers. He closed it again. He proceeded to change from his black and red flight suit into a pair of black pants and a maroon long-sleeved sweatshirt. In his bare feet, he padded back to the kitchen.

He laid his hand casually on her hip.

SANNARO

You want me to watch everything while you change?

CHERNA

Sure.

She went into their room.

A minute later, she came back out wearing a simple light blue tube dress.

He grinned at her as she returned to the kitchen.

She slapped him on the shoulder.

CHERNA

Oh, Sannaro Damirateyak, stop undressing me with your eyes! We have things to do tonight.

SANNARO

I can think of plenty to do tonight.

CHERNA

Andu's ready to hide again, lover. Restrain yourself.

SANNARO

All right. He just doesn't appreciate how nice marriage can be.

CHERNA

We've been married for sixteen years!

SANNARO

Sixteen glorious years.

Sannaro kissed her again.

Cherna pulled away and turned down the heat on the stove.

CHERNA

Oh, the water's boiling over! Go to the living room and let me pay attention to cooking.

SANNARO

Okay.

He slumped his shoulders and walked out of the kitchen.

Cherna

Oh, San, you can be so silly sometimes.

He went to the computer and turned on his favorite game to occupy his time until dinner was called.

CHERNA (PSI V.O.)

Time to eat.

Sannaro closed down his game and went to the table just as Andoku and Ambrika came from their rooms to join them.

Cherna set their plates in front of them.

CHERNA

Eat well, I've got a surprise I brought home during lunch.

SANNARO

I can hardly wait. Hope it's nice and sweet.

CHERNA

Oh, you'll like it.

AMBRIKA

Well, if Dad will like it, I'm sure I will.

ANDOKU

Yeah, I like your surprises, Mom.

They ate quietly for the rest of dinner until all their plates were cleared.

Cherna gathered all the dirty plates to take them into the kitchen and returned with clean desert plates.

CHERNA

Ready?

SANNARO

More than ready.

She ducked back into the kitchen and brought out a silver filigreed cake plate and pulled the cover off with a flourish.

CHERNA

Chocolate cherry cake!

SANNARO

Oh, what's the occasion?

CHERNA

Nothing! I saw it in the cafeteria and thought it looked delicious, so I asked if I could bring it home. They said they could easily make another before dinner, so here it is.

She set it down on the table and went back for the cake knife.

Sannaro rubbed his hands together.

SANNARO

Oh, this is going to be great!

AMBRIKA

Me first!

Cherna cut the cake and Sannaro passed out slices for each of them.

Sannaro pecked Cherna on the cheek.

CHERNA

My pleasure.

Sannaro dug into his slice with relish.

SANNARO'S PSYCHIC VISION

A standard living room was seen through tear blurred eyes.

WOMAN

Please, stop.

A man snatched the cut flowers from a vase and threw them across the room into the wall.

MAN

You should have thought about that before you did this fausa! I can't believe how stupid you are! How could you even think I wouldn't be mad?

WOMAN

I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't want to make you mad.

He pulled her from the floor and slapped her hard across the face.

MAN

Why do I even try to reason with you? Maybe if you had half a brain something would get done.

She held her throbbing cheek and cried harder.

MAN

Oh, shut up!

He raised his fist toward her.

She shrunk away from him and quieted herself, although her tears continued to flow down her face.

In another room, a baby began to cry.

WOMAN

One of the baby's awake. I have to feed them.

She carefully slipped around the perimeter of the room.

He threw the vase at her.

She raised her arm to block the flying object and deflected it into the wall.

MAN

Fine, run to the kids!

He rushed into the bedroom and the door whooshed closed.

She heard the lock clatter home.

She went over to the shards of the vase and picked it up. She sobbed inconsolably. Her mother made that vase for her.

The doorbell rang.

She carried the broken vase with her to the door.

The door swept open and a protocol enforcer stood at their doorstep.

WOMAN

I'm sorry, I bumped the wall and made my vase fall off a high shelf.

PROTOCOL ENFORCER

It hit you good on the cheek there.

WOMAN

Yes, it did.

PROTOCOL ENFORCER

I'll have to give you a sound disruption citation.

He pulled out his hand-held computer.

WOMAN

Can I go now? The baby's crying and she'll wake her brother up too.

PROTOCOL ENFORCER

Okay, you'll get the finished citation by email in the morning.

She nodded her head and commanded the door to close.

She went into the nursery. Sure enough, both were standing in their cribs crying. She picked them up, changed their diapers and fed them. Then she cried herself to sleep sitting in the nursery chair, clutching the broken vase to her chest.

BACK TO KUMANI SANNARO'S APARTMENT

Sannaro sat up in his bed, breathing hard. He took a few gulping breaths to settle himself down. He looked beside him and Cherna was curled up in peaceful deep sleep.

He centered himself to search for the mental pattern that always accompanied received dreams. He found the mental signature and felt it familiar.

He thought of Ahdri's mental signature and compared it, the receiving signature was similar, but just different enough for it not to be a match.

He thought of Tanei's and it fit perfectly.

This was disturbing that Tanei and Viho lived on the Urvasi, parsecs away from the Kumani. If his sister was projecting her dreams over parsecs for his own telepathy to pick up in an unconscious state, she was very upset.

He stood up from bed, grabbed a pair of shorts and pulled them on. He went into the living room to use the computer so he wouldn't risk waking Cherna.

He sat down at the computer and called Central Communications.

KI'EL

CenCom. You're up late, San.

SANNARO

Ki'iwa, Ki'el, can you call Urvasi for me? I need to talk to my sister.

KI'EL

Let's see where Urvasi is and what their ship time is first, San? If it's during their sleep cycle, they may ask you to call her later. Is it an emergency?

SANNARO

Not really, but I need to talk to her about something that's bothering me.

KI'EL

And it's keeping you awake.

SANNARO

Houk.

KI'EL

Well, I see here that they're at mid-afternoon. I'll patch the call through.

SANNARO

Fa'arata.

The screen went blank for a minute before it lit up again.

UR-KE'IKA

Urvasi Central Communications, Ur- Ke'ika speaking, how may I help you. Ku-?

SANNARO

Sannaro. I would like to talk to my sister Tanei, mate to Viho.

UR-KE'IKA

One minute, please.

SANNARO

Fa'arata.

The screen blanked for another minute before the auburn haired woman with a few freckles across the bridge of her slightly upturned nose showed on the screen.

TANEI

Sanna, nice to hear from you again.

Sannaro felt his face heat up in a blush and he flipped his midnight blue shoulder-length hair in front of his face. He didn't like it when people would address him by his childhood name.

TANEI

You're so cute when you blush.

Sannaro put his head in his hands.

TANEI

A bit leisurely dressed too. Is it sleep cycle there?

He felt his face cool again so he swept his hair back behind his ears again and looked up at her.

SANNARO

Houk, it is.

TANEI

Well, I can't send you a mid-night snack from another region of space. You're going to have to call your own cafeteria.

SANNARO

You know I'm not calling to order food, silly. I need to talk to you, Tanei.

TANEI

What's wrong? Is Cheri and the kids all right?

SANNARO

They're fine. Nui, it's you I'm worried about.

TANEI

Why would you be worried about me? I'm fine.

SANNARO

Are you?

Tanei's eyes shifted.

TANEI

How could you know? We're not anywhere near one another.

SANNARO

Remember, I'm telepathic? Sure, the telepathic message is delayed a few hours to travel through space, but it's like a light wave that only someone familiar to you would sense. Remember during the Zuran war when I received nightmares from Di'ok about him being tortured by the Zurans as a prisoner of war?

TANEI

Houk, he was parsecs away too.

SANNARO

Now, will you tell me what's going on between you and Viho?

Her eyes teared.

TANEI

Viho and I have a few arguments here and there. What's so unusual about that?

SANNARO

Where did you sleep that night, in the nursery with the twins? Viho locked the door and wouldn't let you in, didn't he?

TANEI

Oh, San, please stay out of this. It's just thatI just need to be a better mate, that's all. Let me work this out, please?

SANNARO

Viho was brutal with you. I don't want you hurt, Tanei. You're my sister.

TANEI

I know, but I'm not living on the Kumani anymore. The Urvasi is my home now and you need to accept that. I'll be fine.

SANNARO

If you have anymore trouble, will you go to the Urvasi council and ask for help?

TANEI

Sure, I'll ask the council for help. Now, go back to bed, Sanna.

SANNARO

Okay, na'ila'ahina.

TANEI

Na'ila'ahina, San.

The monitor flickered to the black screen with the red firebird with wings raised. On it's breast was the symbol of the Kumani.

He decided he'd speak with Hadah in the morning. For now, he reluctantly returned to bed.

When Sannaro's alarm sounded, he sat up feeling no happier than he had when he'd returned to bed.

Cherna turned over beside him, sat up and stretched.

CHERNA

Morning, lover.

Sannaro frowned.

CHERNA

What's wrong with you?

SANNARO

Just had a bad dream during the night.

CHERNA

Yours or someone elses?

SANNARO

Someone elses. I'd rather keep it in confidence right now.

CHERNA

I always know that sometimes the things your telepathy picks up you think need to stay private, but sometimes I'm curious.

SANNARO

You and Di'ok always are.

CHERNA

Oh, cheap shot, Sannaro Damirateyak!

She threw her pillow at him.

Sannaro chuckled as he snatched the pillow out of the air and set it back down on the bed.

She stood up and began to dress in a fresh black and white flight suit.

He stood up and began to dress in his own flight suit.

SANNARO

I'll tell you about it once I think on it for a while, houk?

CHERNA

Houk, I'll let it slide for now.

SANNARO

I know you aren't as nosy as your brother is and you're still my best friends.

CHERNA

Why can't I stay mad at you?

Sannaro became lost in thought.

CHERNA

Cherna to Sannaro, do you copy?

Sannaro shook his head and focused on the present again.

SANNARO

What?

CHERNA

Daydreaming or talking to someone? I didn't feel that weird vibration I get when I stand next to you while you're telepathically talking to someone.

SANNARO

That dream has me thinking a lot. I need to talk to Hadah.

He pulled out his pistol belt and slung it around his waist and thigh. Then he slung his air tank onto his back and clipped the straps across his chest.

CHERNA

Aren't you even going to wait until after breakfast?

SANNARO

I don't feel very hungry right now. Talking with Hadah feels more urgent.

CHERNA

Then I guess I'll see you later.

Sannaro kissed her before he left their room. He stopped to slip his boots on again, then walked out into the hall.

END ACT 1

ACT 2

He walked down the hall only marginally keeping a proximity bubble around him to sense when someone was coming toward him, but his mind was deep in thought.

His ears shivered from a close mind.

His attention returned to outside himself and he looked up.

DI'OK

Whoa, Kumani to Sannaro, are you there?

SANNARO

Ki'iwa, Di.

DI'OK

Want to talk about it?

SANNARO

I need to, but not with you.

DI'OK

Oh, because I'm nosy? You don't want to tell me anything anymore.

SANNARO

Okay, Tanei's having marital trouble. I need to talk to Hadah about how much I can help her.

DI'OK

Oh, wow, that is beyond my expertise.

SANNARO

I'm glad you understand. I had a telepathic dream from her last night about an argument she and Viho had and it really has me concerned.

Di'ok shivered uncontrollably.

DI'OK

I did that once and I didn't even know I was doing it. I'm really sorry that happened.

SANNARO

You don't need to apologize. They only made me want to free you to save your life and I won't regret it.

Di'ok smiled.

SANNARO

Now, I really need to move on. Cherna will be mad at me for talking to you when I wouldn't even tell her about the dream from Tanei.

DI'OK

Wow, privileged information! I promise I'll keep it to myself.

SANNARO

Fa'arata, Di.

Sannaro walked down the hall again with Di'ok beside him.

DI'OK

Why is it that when you're preoccupied with something while you walk anymore and I come up to you, I feel a tickling sensation?

SANNARO

Oh, that's what Saili call a proximity sphere. It's a telepathic awareness they use in darkness.

DI'OK

You didn't have that before you took lessons with Gavasno.

SANNARO

Nui, I didn't know about it, but I'm glad I do now. Studying with Gavasno has been a great experience.

DI'OK

If I hadn't known you since you were seven, I'd think you were a different person.

SANNARO

I've changed a lot since then, but I'm still the person you knew. I just have more telepathic control.

They went through a heavy bulkhead into a loft with every inch of the wall lined with machinery and consoles to the left.

To the right, was a banister overlooking a lower floor.

On the far wall at the fore was a large view screen with many smaller screens around it. The large screen showed a view of deep space while the others could be programmed to show different views ranging from on-board Vizha'i to any ship-wide information.

Several meters away from it began a whole series of computer boards in a horseshoe shape.

In the middle of the room was a comfortable-looking chair.

Sannaro and Di'ok walked down the stairs.

DI'OK

See you later. I've got duty now.

Di'ok walked to the rear wall where the communications station was and took the headset from Ki'el.

Ki'el walked toward Sannaro and patted him on the shoulder.

KI'EL

Got your worry resolved last night, San?

SANNARO

Not really, but there isn't much I can do about it right now.

KI'EL

That's how things go sometimes.

Ki'el walked up the stairs.

Hadah stepped out of his cramped office under the stairs and walked up to Sannaro.

HADAH

Ki'el told me about your mid-night call to Urvasi, San. Want to talk about it?

SANNARO

Could we in your office, please?

HADAH

Sure.

Hadah backtracked to the narrow door.

The door swept open and Hadah gestured Sannaro inside.

Sannaro shivered before he slipped inside and sat down in the chair across from Hadah's small desk. Behind him, under the slant of the stairs was a small cot.

Hadah slipped through the narrow space between the desk and wall and sat down.

HADAH

What's wrong, San?

SANNARO

I had a bad dream last night. Viho was beating up Tanei. When I called her to ask if the dream was true, I received a reluctant admission. She said, she and Viho fight from time to time.

HADAH

We all fight with our mates sometimes, San.

SANNARO

I know, but he hit her and left a visible bruise on her cheek! He threw a small vase at her, then locked her out of their bedroom! She slept the night in the rocking chair in the nursery!

HADAH

Did the protocol officers come to investigate the disturbance?

SANNARO

Houk, and she told him she knocked the vase off a high shelf and it hit her on the cheek! He accepted her explanation and only gave her a small sound disruption citation!

HADAH

San, I don't condone fighting outside the gym in a formal challenge, but the PEs did their job. If she didn't want to admit the truth, that's her right, however wrong it seems to you.

SANNARO

I'm worried about her. She's frightened of Viho.

HADAH

There's not much you can do about it. She lives on Urvasi now. It's the Urvasi's business. You're a citizen of the Kumani. By Astrisi law, you can't intervene. Just let the Urvasi take care of the problem.

SANNARO

She's still my sister, Hadah!

HADAH

Look, I can see this dream has you very upset. Why don't you take a shuttle and fly yourself to New Sailia for a few days to get your mind off this? You'll see by then that you have to trust your sister to handle her own problems. I'll have Kosi prepare a long distance shuttle for you and why don't you go home to change and pack? Houk?

SANNARO

Houk.

HADAH

Good. In a few days, you'll see I'm right.

Sannaro stood up and walked out the door.

DI'OK

How did it go?

Sannaro bent down beside the communications station and rested his hands at the edge of the control board.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Hadah wants me to butt out. He's sending me to my uncle's house on New Sailia for a few days to get my head straight.

DI'OK (PSI V.O.)

Forgive me if I say, I told you so. It's Astrisi law, you don't get involved with the problems on other ships. Not that it's going to make you feel any better.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

It doesn't, but Hadah says I have to accept it. We'll I'm going home to pack.

He stood up again.

DI'OK

Have fun. Say hi to Uncle Devasru and Aunt Tsekani for me.

SANNARO

I will.

Sannaro walked back up the stairs. He retraced his steps to his apartment and went inside. He quested his telepathy out to find Cherna's mind and slipped in with a caress.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Lover, I'm going to New Sailia for about a week.

CHERNA (PSI V.O.)

Does it have to do with this dream you had last night?

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Houk. It was a fight between Viho and Tanei.

SANNARO'S PSYCHIC VISION

Sannaro replayed the dream to Cherna's mind.

BACK TO HALLWAY (TRAVELLING)

CHERNA (PSI V.O.)

Ouch, what a terrible dream.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

That's why I wanted to talk to Hadah before anyone else. He told me since she's living on the Urvasi now, it was their business and, by Astrisi law, I couldn't do anything about it. He suggested I take this trip to New Sailia to cool off.

CHERNA (PSI V.O.)

Okay, tell your aunt and uncle hi for me. I'll keep everything running smoothly here on the flight decks.

He went into the bedroom and pulled out the clothes he was going to take with him. He picked up the old blue and red bag he'd had for years since the first time he was sent to his uncle Devasru.

He opened the bag and put his clothes inside.

He pulled out another set of clothes for him to change into. The pants were midnight blue and the long sleeved thigh-length tunic was garnet red.

He looked at the shiny metallic fabric and chuckled. The first time his uncle had forced him to wear Saili style clothes, he'd given Devasru a hard time.

He strapped his pistol belt around his waist again. Even though he knew he wouldn't need it on New Sailia, space between the Kumani and New Sailia could hold threats to him.

Once he was finished dressing. He closed up the bag, then sent his telepathy out to find his sister.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Vara, I'm sure you know what's been happening?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

As usual, emotions have spilled over about your current state of mind, little brother.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Hadah's sending me to New Sailia for a visit. Do you want to go with me?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

As much as I would like to, I have clients to see this week and I don't think I should cancel them.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Okay, I'll say hi for you.

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

You'd better not jump ship without telling Danu goodbye or you'll get an earful from me when you get back.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

I'll talk to him as soon as I'm finished with you. Then there's Zhad and Adara.

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Di'ok?

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Already talked to him. I can't ever leave this ship without talking to a dozen people who wants to know!

INT. UPPER FLIGHT DECK

A red and white shuttle was being serviced. The module they'd mounted on it was the modified version that offered a second fuel tank for long distance flight. Sannaro's living space would be more cramped, but that was the trade off he'd have to live with for extended range.

Tall dark-haired Kosi met him as he approached the shuttle.

KOSI

Just some small pointers for you, San. The extra fuel tank makes response a little more sluggish. You're fully armed if you need it, but remember, it's not going to maneuver as well as normal.

SANNARO

Houk.

KOSI

You look really different in those clothes, almost glaring.

SANNARO

They're Saili clothes. I want to blend in with my native race when I'm not in the shuttle.

KOSI

Just not used to seeing you wearing metallic hues, other than your skin tone.

SANNARO

I feel strange wearing them too. Is she ready?

KOSI

Houk, she's all yours.

Sannaro walked up the ramp into the shuttle. He went to the locker beside the small bunk and stowed his bag.

Kosi went over to the tight kitchenette and opened the refrigerator.

KOSI

Your food is stocked for several days. You might have to restock along the way at least once. Dry goods are in the cabinet below the microwave. When you refuel, remember to have your fresh water tank refilled. She's tight, but better than a standard short range shuttle module for a long flight. Sorry we don't have enough room on the Kumani to stow space yachts.

SANNARO

I don't want one anyway. I can live with what you've provided for me.

KOSI

Good. Have a good flight, San. Enjoy visiting your family.

SANNARO

Fa'arata.

Kosi stepped out of the shuttle and the hatch closed.

Sannaro went through another hatch into the cockpit and sat down in the pilot's seat. He strapped himself in, pulled on his headset and began pre-flight checks. Once he was sure everything checked out, he called flight control to tell them he was ready for launch instructions.

He was told to follow lane two onto the retrieval lift and standby to be raised onto the launch deck.

He activated the hover jets and moved the shuttle onto the lift. He powered down again and waited for the clang and normal warning that the lift was engaging.

He powered up the shuttle and flew out into space. Once he was clear of the launch deck, he banked around to take one last look at the Kumani before he adjusted coordinates for New Sailia.

He turned to his travel trajectory and settled in for the long flight.

(LATER)

He keyed in a code and brought up the communications screen. He put in the code to call the Urvasi.

UR-MAHIK

Urvasi Central Communications. Ur-Mahik speaking. How may I help you, Aurum?

SANNARO

Sannaro. I would like to speak to Viho.

UR-MAHIK

One moment, please.

The screen blanked for a minute, then the man from his dream appeared on screen.

VIHO

Who are you?

SANNARO

I am Sannaro, Tanei's older brother.

VIHO

Tanei's not here right now. What do you want?

SANNARO

I'm concerned about Tanei and your relationship. I talked with her the other day and she had a deep impact bruise on her cheek.

VIHO

Anyway, she was hit by a falling vase from a high shelf.

SANNARO

That's what she told the P.E.s. You really slapped her hard.

VIHO

How do you know about all this?

SANNARO

Let's just say I know and I don't like how you're treating my sister. I want you to seek counseling for anger management.

VIHO

She's not your sister. You're not even related to her. You're just a foster child.

SANNARO

Not my sister? I've lived with her since she was born and I care deeply about her. You're hurting her.

VIHO

Listen, Sonorous, or whatever your name is, stay out of my marriage. Tanei's my wife and I'll handle her however I want. You hear?

SANNARO

I will if you promise to seek counseling and stop hurting my sister.

VIHO

I don't have to listen to you. If you call me again, I'll put in a complaint about you to the Ship's council and you'll get a reprimand from your commander. Now leave Tanei and me alone.

The screen went blank.

Sannaro gave a big sigh and put the monitor on standby.

He stood up and went aft to the locker and drew out his bag. He pulled out an audio mini disc, then returned his bag to the locker.

He returned to the cockpit and slipped the disc into a slot beside his left hand. He reached over to some controls beside him and turned on music from his favorite Astrisi hard rock band.

He laid back and relaxed.

He moved to the third control console against the side wall and changed the controls to the personal computer setting and started a game.

Most of the day was spent involved in the game he was playing until he felt sleepy. He turned off the game, leaned back and closed his eyes.

SANNARO'S PSYCHIC VISION

Sannaro found himself back in Tanei's apartment. Again he was inside his sister's body being shaken violently before an enraged Viho.

VIHO

How many times do I have to tell you not to talk to anyone about our fights? You think you can go and tell anybody you damn well choose?

TANEI

But I didn't tell Sannaro!

VIHO

Then why did he call me to give me a damned lecture? You broke my trust!

He shoved her away from him.

She stumbled to the floor.

TANEI

I didn't! I swear, I didn't! San just knows things other people don't! He's telepathic and very sensitive to people close to him!

VIHO

You want me to believe he just picked up your thoughts from parsecs away?

TANEI

Yes, he picks up distressing thoughts in his sleep! It happened before during the Zuran War, when his friend Di'ok was taken as a Prisoner of War and tortured by the Zurans!

VIHO

So now you think I torture you?

TANEI

No, no, Viho! I just - I love you and when you yell at me, I get upset. He senses when I get upset.

VIHO

You're talking nonsense, woman. Why do I even try to reason with you?

TANEI

It's true! I can't explain it better, but Sannaro's like that. He's Saili.

VIHO

Yellow skinned freak.

Sannaro's vision became more blurred.

TANEI

My brother's not a freak. He's gentle, kindhearted and understanding to his family.

VIHO

If he can understand you, he is a freak. Stop talking to him. Better yet, don't talk to anyone about us. You understand? You understand me?

He stepped toward her threateningly.

Tanei shrunk backwards on the floor.

TANEI

Houk.

VIHO

What we talk about is our business and our business alone. Don't betray my trust again.

TANEI

Houk, Viho.

BACK TO SHUTTLE

Sannaro bolted up in his chair, his eyes wide. Then he ground his teeth. He hated when people called him a yellow-skinned freak. He blew his breath out slowly and centered himself again.

He stared outside the cockpit window for several minutes watching the stars streak past.

Maybe Hadah was right, he needed to allow the Urvasi to handle the problem. Tanei was their citizen now.

INT. AQUILA CITY – DAY

He stopped over at the undersea capitol city at Aquila for refueling and restock for a few hours. He went to a restaurant for fresh unprepared food. As he sat eating, a human man sat down beside him.

HUMAN

So you're one of those New Saili, huh?

He looked up at the scruffy man with nondescript brown hair.

He deliberately suppressed his Astrisi accent and spoke in the accent he'd had on Regalis.

SANNARO

I am.

HUMAN

How's that new planet you guys claimed?

SANNARO

It's nice.

HUMAN

I hear even humans like me can go there? It really has a human friendly environment?

SANNARO

We're not isolationists like those who stayed on Sailia. The atmosphere can support human oxygen-breathing life.

HUMAN

I see your not afraid of carrying a weapon, too.

SANNARO

It's a dangerous universe out there in space.

HUMAN

I know it. I'm a freighter, myself, and I've seen plenty of pirate ships. Managed to sneak around them so far. So what you doing way out here at Aquila?

SANNARO

Returning home from a business trip.

HUMAN

Oh? What's your business?

SANNARO

I'm not at liberty to discuss that.

HUMAN

By your looks, you're a scrapping guy. I'd say law enforcement of some sort, like maybe a bounty hunter. Bet that's why you're so secretive.

SANNARO

Look, I'm a telepathy tracker on a mission and you're drawing attention to it. I would prefer we end this conversation on an amiable note?

HUMAN

Oh, yeah, a psi tracker. That fits you. I'll just leave you alone then. Don't want to blow your cover.

He finished eating and left the restaurant.

He walked slowly down the city walkway and watched the marine life swim around the biosphere that soared high above the tallest building.

Eventually, he made it to an elevator and told the voice sensor mechanism to take him to the surface of the ocean where the spaceport was on a huge man-made platform kilometers long. He returned to the shuttle and launched from Aquila soon after.

INT. KUMANI LONG DISTANCE SHUTTLE

On the second half of the trip, he turned on some human hard rock and resumed his game.

When he slept again, he was relieved he didn't remember any dreams.

By late afternoon, he retook control of the shuttle from the auto pilot and called to New Sailia.

SANNARO

Astrisi Kumani long range shuttle twenty-two to New Sailia flight control, requesting permission to approach and land.

NEW SAILIA FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Roger, Astrisi shuttle twenty-two, approach New Sailia at vector 557829.5, copy.

SANNARO

I copy, New Sailia.

NEW SAILIA FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Welcome home, General.

SANNARO

(reluctantly)

Thank you.

NEW SAILIA FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

You're visits are always an honor, sir.

He entered the approach vector into his computer and followed it into the space port.

END ACT 2

ACT 3

He cut through the stratosphere and felt the increasing gravity tug at the skin of his shuttle. He applied the brakes and slowed down.

Ahead of him, the space port expanded from a speck to a sprawling complex of landing strips. He identified his assigned landing strip and steadily dropped his altitude.

A short time later, he flew across the strip and slowed nearly to a stop. He guided the shuttle over to the parking area and cut to hover. He took the power stick and slowly reduced power.

The shuttle lowered smoothly to the ground.

He went through the power down sequence and shut down the shuttle. He pulled the last mini-disc out of the slot, then went aft to get his bag. He stowed the mini-disc inside before he slung the bag over his shoulder. He palmed the hatch open.

It slipped into the skin of the ship and the ramp lowered to the ground.

He sighed and willed himself patience and strength when he saw the crowd that was forming near the main terminal to greet his arrival.

A hover car entered through the guarded gate and flew up to his shuttle.

He saw at the controls was a gold skinned man with mid-back lavender hair. He stopped a few meters beyond the ramp and climbed out of the car.

EXT. NEW SAILIA SPACEPORT

Sannaro walked down the ramp to the tarmac.

Devasru met him at the base of the ramp.

DEVASRU

San, what a surprise. You should have called ahead.

Sannaro walked down the ramp and held his hand up, palm toward his uncle.

Devasru held his hand up and they traded light scans.

SANNARO

And have it get out to the public that I was coming? Knowing them, they'll declare a major holiday with parades and a formal dinner. I just want to visit my family.

DEVASRU

There's something unsettled about you. Get in and then we can talk about it.

Sannaro gratefully climbed into the passenger side of the hover car and Devasru flew it out of the spaceport.

DEVASRU

You're guarded. Is it that bad?

SANNARO

Well, it's not a galactic crisis. It's more personal this time.

DEVASRU

I can tell, you're using your voice instead of telepathy.

SANNARO

I'm still vocal oriented because I was raised that way, but I'll link with you when we get to the house.

DEVASRU

Okay.

Sannaro watched as the metal and brick buildings blurred past the window of the car.

SANNARO

The city's grown more since I was last here.

DEVASRU

We're still in the process of building everything. It's coming along nicely, but we're still preserving parts of the wild in various areas so we don't over-urbanize. This planet's so beautiful.

SANNARO

It is.

Devasru turned and landed in front of a house of aquamarine siding and red brick.

Standing outside was a gold skinned woman with waist long silver blue hair. She waved to them as they climbed out of the car. She rushed over and hugged Sannaro.

He hugged her back.

SANNARO

Hi, Aunt Tsekani.

TSEKANI

We were so shocked when we sensed your announcement that you were approaching our planet. You should have called ahead.

DEVASRU

He's afraid everyone would whisk him off to parades and dinner parties.

TSEKANI

You're worried about something. Come in and relax.

They entered the house and Sannaro immediately remembered the same mauve furniture in the living room. Like everything Saili, it was of a shiny metallic hue and the tables were a silver blue metal.

DEVASRU

Let me take your bag.

Sannaro handed his bag over and Devasru ducked into a side room, then returned a few seconds later.

TSEKANI

Have a seat.

Sannaro sat down and heaved a big sigh.

DEVASRU

Yes, what ever is bothering you is weighing heavily on your mind. Please open your shields and share it with us.

Sannaro took a deep breath and concentrated.

BEGIN FLASHBACK OF SANNARO'S DREAM

BACK TO DEVASRU'S HOUSE

Aunt Tsekani gasped and Uncle Devasru went a pale shade of yellow.

DEVASRU

Barbarous of him to treat a woman like that.

TSEKANI

What was wrong with the flowers? They were lovely. And that vase- I can understand why Tanei was very saddened by its loss. Didn't he know Adara made that for her?

SANNARO

I don't know. Tanei isn't telepathic, so I only received her impressions of the arguments. He just seems to be reacting to his emotions without thought.

DEVASRU

So why are you here? Why aren't you going to protect her?

BEGIN FLASHBACK OF SANNARO'S DISCUSSION WITH HADAH

BACK TO DEVASRU'S HOUSE

DEVASRU

San, I'm grateful to Hadah and the Astrisi for helping us exodus from Sailia and find this beautiful world to settle on, but I'll never understand Astrisi reasoning, it can be so narrow.

TSEKANI

I'm sorry about this, but how can you turn your back on your sister and come here?

SANNARO

I know their thought processes can be narrow, but that's the culture I was raised in. Their laws may not make sense to Saili, but as an Astrisi citizen, I have to honor those laws. I'm not at all happy about it.

DEVASRU

That's evident, but you know in this case those laws are wrong. That Astrisi isn't going to stop until Tanei's dead. Could you live with that, Sannaro?

Sannaro blinked back the tears that threatened to flow.

TSEKANI

Go to her, San. Save her life.

SANNARO

I'll be punished if I do.

DEVASRU

And your conscience will punish you for the rest of your life if she dies because you didn't save her. Which is worse?

TSEKANI

At least since we've joined the Alliance, capitol punishment has nearly been eliminated by the Astrisi. They're using my house arrest system where the offender wears a location anklet to trace their moves around the ship until their sentence is finished, unless the crime is too despicable that they don't think they can coexist with the offender.

DEVASRU

Would they find you despicable for wanting to save your sister's life?

SANNARO

I don't think so.

DEVASRU

Then go to her, Sannaro. Stop hiding here.

Sannaro stood up.

SANNARO

You're right, Uncle. I'll need my shuttle refueled and restocked so I can begin my trip to Urvasi.

DEVASRU

Oh, no, that shuttle's way too slow. You'll take my space yacht and stow your shuttle within it. My ships much faster with a much larger fuel tank.

TSEKANI

You must save her as soon as possible, San.

SANNARO

Thank you, I'll take your ship. I hope this one's faster than the one the pirates crashed on the way to Sailia?

DEVASRU

It's faster, but still a bit slower than the Kumani.

SANNARO

I don't expect to get the same performance of a large ship like the Kumani, but a faster ship is appreciated.

Sannaro sensed his Uncle send a long distance message for his ship to be prepared for a long distance flight, then he pulled back.

DEVASRU

Let me give you all the codes you'll need to run the ship.

Devasru concentrated.

SANNARO'S PSYCHIC VISION

A list of numbers and their functions came to Sannaro's mind.

BACK TO DEVASRU'S HOUSE

SANNARO

Do you have an audio program in your main computer?

DEVASRU

Oh yes, that cacophony you like to listen to.

Sannaro rolled his eyes.

DEVASRU

Yes, you may listen to your- music on the computer system. Just don't download it to memory, please.

SANNARO

I have them all on mini-disc.

DEVASRU

I have a mini-disc drive you can use on board.

SANNARO

Thank you.

DEVASRU

There are also plenty of shoot-em-up games Vanrero's downloaded for his amusement on flights. You should like that.

SANNARO

I'll check them out.

DEVASRU

Good luck talking the Urvasi Astrisi into understanding your concern for Tanei.

SANNARO

I'll need it. I just hope I'll get through to them, but they've never been around me much so I don't know what kind of reception I'll receive.

DEVASRU

Don't you have a good reputation throughout the fleet from the Zuran War?

SANNARO

Probably that may help me, but I'm not going to put too much faith in my reputation to sway them. They need solid reasonable argument to accept what I'm going to request.

DEVASRU

You know the Astrisi better than I do.

SANNARO

I appreciate everything Gavasno, both of you and the new Saili have done for me. I feel better about myself than I ever have, but the Astrisi are still a part of me.

TSEKANI

We understand.

DEVASRU

Yes, your mind still thinks like an Astrisi.

SAILI STAFF (PSI V.O.)

Governor Devasru, your spaceship is prepared.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

Thank you.

SANNARO

I hope they stocked the galley with human food. You know I still have trouble with my stomach wanting to turn when I see Saili food.

DEVASRU

They know your preferences. I'll return you to the spaceport and take you to the Euryanassa.

SANNARO

That's the name of the ship?

DEVASRU

Yes, she's fully registered with the Alliance. I've taken her to Earth a few times to talk with Ambassador Eradano, our representative to the Alliance Council. That's why I wanted a powerful ship. It's a long way from New Sailia to Earth.

SANNARO

And the Urvasi's trade route is around Earth so the range will definitely be appreciated.

Devasru retrieved Sannaro's bag and handed it to him.

DEVASRU

Not that we don't want you to visit us, San, we're always overjoyed to see you and your families, but this time I think the priorities should be rearranged.

SANNARO

I think that's what's been bothering me so bad, but I don't like to disobey Hadah. I only do as a last resort. Both of you have shown me this is my last resort for Tanei's sake.

DEVASRU

I don't like to advise civil disobedience, but I think you love your foster sister too much to turn your back on her. She's in deep trouble and her children will be next to be abused unless this situation is forced to be changed. If only Astrisi had telepathy to know these terrible secrets non-telepaths think they can get away with, something would've already been done to reign Viho in years ago. I know the Saili would've intervened when he was a child and taught him how to handle his emotions better.

SANNARO

And he seemed so nice at Tanei's Festival of Mating. But then so did Verano seem nice, though a little zealous to those he worked with. If a person wants to keep their inner self secret from people around him, they'll try anything to pull off the deception.

Devasru cringed and blushed in irritation.

SANNARO

It happened, uncle. I know you tried to protect me and feel you failed me. It was to my advantage I was already an Astrisi warrior who could defend myself against Verano's treachery. That's why I'm still alive today and now I have to save my foster sister so her children and she will survive.

SANNARO

You're right. I don't think I could have protected you. You showed me you could protect yourself. Let's get to the spaceport.

Devasru walked out of the house.

Sannaro followed him.

He climbed back into the hover car and they took off for the spaceport again.

Shortly, they were back on the landing field and Devasru drove them over to a long house of private hangers.

They got out and walked into the door of a hanger.

They entered and Sannaro stopped to appraise the ship before him. It was a sleek mid-sized ship two stories high. The body was a rounded trapezoid shape with the lower end toward the fore. It's wings started mid-ship in reverse trapezoids toward the aft. A simple but effective design. At the rear was a door that lowered to become a ramp into the modest cargo hold. Below the cargo hold was the two large drive engines. It was silver blue with the symbol of New Sailia on the side of its nose.

DEVASRU

Please don't take her to the Urvasi. It's bad enough I'm suggesting civil disobedience, but I'd like to keep my collaboration to a minimum.

SANNARO

As soon as I know where the Urvasi is, I'll find the nearest spaceport and hanger her there. Then I'll take off again in my Astrisi shuttle to make the final approach. I don't think the Urvasi would be able to stow her anyway. She's too big.

DEVASRU

Even though you don't believe, may the Great Forger watch over this mercy trip.

SANNARO

Him and the Great Firebird.

DEVASRU

I understand your anxiousness. It's not easy to disobey your superiors for a matter of the heart, but it's sometimes necessary. Good luck, son.

SANNARO

Thanks, Uncle Devasru.

Sannaro went back out to his shuttle and hovered it over to the hanger.

His uncle's crew opened the hanger door. The Euryanassa's cargo hold was already open for him, so he hovered his shuttle carefully into the tight cargo hold and set it down. He shut the shuttle down and exited it. He closed its hatch and went forward to the Euryanassa's bridge.

On the way, he found the main sleeping suite and stowed his bag.

This ship was nicely furnished with the noticeable Saili metallic style and nicely upholstered metallic hued couches.

Sannaro was relieved to see that now Uncle Devasru had emergency crash couches with proper harness webbing all throughout the ship. He hoped he wouldn't have to fight pirates, but at least if he was in that position again, he wouldn't have to create a makeshift crash couch from bed sheets.

He took out his box of mini-discs and went on into the cockpit. The controls were pretty Alliance standard so he wouldn't have to spend too much time acquainting himself with the layout of the control board. He sat down, put his mini-disc box inside a stow box below the pilot's seat and then looked closer at the control board.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Okay, I'm ready for departure.

He pulled on the headset that was laid on the control board.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

I've just been in contact with the Bureau of Space Transportation and got the tracking registry for the Urvasi. It's 9987. Enter that code in the sensor program and it will give you up-to-date information on the Urvasi's location through BST.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

You've learned how to be devious, Uncle Devasru.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

Since I chose the deviant lifestyle, I might as well get well into it.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Thank you.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

Even with all considered, have a nice flight. Her registry is NS135.

SANNARO

NS135 Euryanassa to New Saili flight control, requesting permission for departure.

NEW SAILIA FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Roger, NS135 Euryanassa, you're cleared for takeoff at vector 165876.1, copy.

SANNARO

Copy that, Control. NS135 Euryanassa launching, over.

NEW SAILIA FLIGHT CONTROL V.O.

Roger, NS135 Euryanassa, have a good flight. Out.

Sannaro hovered her off the ground and carefully slipped her out of the hanger. Once he was clear, he angled her up into the sky and increased power to escape velocity.

He smiled as she shot firmly through the stratosphere into space.

She had good speed.

Once he was beyond New Sailia's solar system, he increased her to three quarter speed.

The stars looked like they compressed for a second, then leapt into elongated strands rushing past the fore portal.

He engaged autopilot, then sat back and grinned. By the on board computer's estimation, she could reach Earth in fifteen twenty-four hour intervals at faster than light speed.

The Kumani would make it in ten days.

For a medium sized ship, fifteen days was impressive.

The computer suggested a stop at Alpha Centauri for refuel and restocking. That was a little more than half the distance between New Sailia and Earth. She was a very nice ship.

He entered in the Urvasi tracking code and a page of information popped up on the screen. Urvasi was at Serius at the moment for another day. Reports were that they'd visit Earth four days later for about two days and possibly voyage toward the Centauris. He projected he may reach the Urvasi at Alpha Centauri or near it so his voyage might be more like ten days.

That was a lot of days he wasn't used to being constantly vigilant to flight controls, but he knew he could do it with the help of more video games to occupy his time.

He blew his breath out slowly to try to cool himself. He swept his shirt off and laid back in his pilot's chair. He went back to the bedroom and pulled out a pair of shorts. He pulled off the shiny leggings and put on the black shorts.

The days passed as quickly as he could expect in an empty ship. He went through all of his cousin's computer games as well as his favorite Astrisi games and listened to all his audio discs several times.

Just to wile away his time on the flight, he'd gone back to the cargo hold to do a systems check on it and was happy to see that both fuel tanks had been topped off at New Sailia. All he'd need was to restock the food for the last quick journey to the Urvasi.

Finally he had to dim the reflective coating on the forward port as he came closer to the twin suns of Centauri.

He dressed himself in a pair of black pants and a Saili silver blue tunic.

He returned to the cockpit and checked the track on the Urvasi again. It was just a day behind him, having stayed at Earth for a day longer than the BST report said they would, so he'd get to Alpha Centauri Seven hours ahead of them, which was fine with him. He had plenty of time to store Euryanassa away and prepare the Astrisi shuttle for liftoff. Now he received a signal from the control console that told him it was time to call Centauri Seven.

SANNARO

NS135 Euryanassa to Alpha Centauri Flight Control, requesting permission to approach Alpha Centauri Seven, over.

ALPHA CENTAURI FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Roger NS135 Euryanassa, you have permission to approach Alpha Centauri Seven at vector 647031.8, copy.

SANNARO

Copy that, Alpha Centauri Flight Control.

ALPHA CENTAURI FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Welcome to Alpha Centauri, Euryanassa, over.

SANNARO

Thank you. Euryanassa, out.

He made his final approach and flew into Centauri Seven's atmosphere. He followed his entry corridor and landed at the New San Francisco spaceport.

EXT. ALPHA CENTAURI 7 SPACEPORT

He stepped down the long ramp from the second level hatch and walked down to the ground. He pulled the sleeves of his tunic up to his elbows. The blasting heat was refreshing from normal Human colony planets, but the glare hurt his eyes.

He was met by a ground crew that handed him a pair of sunglasses.

CENTAURIAN

Our compliments, Aurum. Centauria wouldn't want you to injure your eyes during your stay with us.

SANNARO

Thank you, I was thinking I'd need to buy a pair of sunglasses inside the terminal.

CENTAURIAN

If the heavy gravity and atmosphere begins to bother you, you can elect to have acclimation sessions.

SANNARO

No thank you. I'm breathing fine. Could you tell me where I can rent a hanger for my ship?

CENTAURIAN

Sure, it's inside the main terminal. Turn to the right as soon as you go in through the doors and follow the signs that will take you straight to the private hanger rental desk.

SANNARO

Thank you.

INT. ALPHA CENTAURI 7 SPACEPORT

After a few minutes of filling out some information on their banks of computers along a wall, he received his lock card from the deck and was told where to hanger the ship.

He went back to the Euryanassa and hovered her over to the correct hanger. He went to the door and inserted his card.

The door whirred open.

Once it was fully open, he hovered her into the hanger.

He exited and closed the door again.

He stepped through the smaller door into the spaceport terminal and locked the door behind him.

He took a local taxi to a shopping center and ate at a local restaurant.

While he ate, he thought that with all the Centauri security, the BST would be suspicious if he suddenly announced his Kumani shuttle taking off when it had never been given landing permission, so he was going to have to think of another way to hide the Euryanassa. Since there was a few small satellites between Alpha and Beta Centauri systems, he thought he might find a planetoid he could leave her on or hover her somewhere within the asteroids and launch his Astrisi shuttle from there.

After he finished eating, he went to the grocery to stock up on food for the shuttle.

Then he returned to the spaceport. He took his groceries to the shuttle and put them away.

FADE OUT.

THE END.
