“FESTIVAL OF SHIPS”

EPISODE 22 – SUPPLIES AT BELVAS

BY: LYSSA THORNE

FADE IN:

INT. UPPER FLIGHT DECK

Sannaro walked past the refuel and rearm tunnels over to the shuttle parking.

He finally arrived at the hatch and climbed in.

Tisa was already in the pilots chair doing a pre-flight check.

Sannaro pecked her shoulder.

She glanced up then slipped over to the co-pilots chair.

Sannaro sat down, swept his hair back out of the way and slipped on the headset.

TISA

You ought to let your hair grow longer.

Sannaro gave her a dirty look.

TISA

No really! Then I can show you how to pin it up.

SANNARO

I will not wear my hair long!

TISA

I heard rumors you’ve had a bad time since this morning, but I didn’t think it would be this bad!

FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Shuttle sixteen, you're cleared for the pulley to the lift.

Then the electromagnetic pulleys began to pull the shuttle toward to the lighted rectangle.

SANNARO

Tower, shuttle sixteen on platform.

FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Houk, stand by.

While they waited, two more shuttles lined up on their starboard side.

FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Platform two engaging.

He did a last minute check of his board to make sure all systems were green as they rose from the maintenance bay into the aft flight bay where the Vizha'i landed.

FLIGHT CONTROL (V.O.)

Lift secure. Shuttle sixteen, launch.

SANNARO

Houk.

He punched the forward thruster button and they flew into space.

He redirected the shuttle to follow the others down to the Algail Spaceport on Belvas.

Sannaro landed his shuttle-craft with practiced ease onto the landing pad at the Algail Space Center on Belvas and he shut down the engines.

TISA

All systems off.

He released his flight straps, stood up and faced his passengers.

Of the passengers, Lazha stood up first.

LAZHA

Leave will be three hours long. Gather the supplies as quickly as possible and constantly keep in touch with Sannaro through your communicators. If the boarding of our cargo should take longer than expected, I’ll inform San and in turn, he’ll notify you. That is all.

When the ramp was lowered, Cherna walked in and wrapped her arm around Sannaro’s waist.

SANNARO

Lazha. Would you like for me to stay and direct the crews?

LAZHA

No, San. Go see Algail with Cherna. The last time you saw it, you were in a state of confusion. It’s a beautiful place and I think you’re entitled to see it this time. I can take care of all of it by myself.

Sannaro paused reluctantly.

Lazha pushed him out the hatch.

LAZHA

Go!

Sannaro and Cherna walked across the landing field.

CHERNA

I wish Di'ok could have gone this time.

SANNARO

I do too, but he had to stay on the Kumani as the communications specialist on duty.

CHERNA

Can’t have everything. Let’s go have fun.

Sannaro laughed and pushed her out the doors of the spaceport into the streets of the capitol city of Belvas.

SANNARO

Don’t forget to use Basic with the Belvans.

She bounced along ahead of him.

They browsed a few shops as they made their way toward the emerald pyramids of the original city of Algail.

CHERNA

They are so beautiful. Do you remember much about your last visit here?

SANNARO

It’s still so fuzzy and confused.

He put his arm around her shoulders.

CHERNA

One good thing about you being taken to your Uncle Devasru, he found out about you and me so it was no longer secret.

SANNARO

I needed to see the Saili attitudes to finally realize how Astrisi I’d become and how kind the majority of Astrisi were to me.

SANNARO

Whoa, not here! It's okay at home, but mind merging is a very intimate act among Saili. Let's not get aroused in front of everyone.

CHERNA

I’m sorry.

Cherna pulled away from him, the moment broken. She glanced at him again then burst into giggling.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Cherna! Would you stop that? You’re embarrassing me!

At that moment, Sannaro saw a flash of golden skin and long blue-black hair.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Oh, Iachi'awei Ushi, Varanani’s coming!

He turned to her and smiled.

SANNARO

Varanani!

The Saili woman hugged him.

VARANANI

I was downtown to wander between classes at the University. I felt your presence and was looking for you.

SANNARO

So how are your studies?

Cherna was using controlled breathing to reign in her mirth.

VARANANI

They’re going great.

Cherna regained her composure.

VARANANI

Psychology is a fascinating subject.

Varanani turned to Cherna now that she was calm again.

VARANANI (CONT.)

So, how are you, Cherna?

CHERNA

I’m all right. San and I were sharing a joke.

VARANANI

Are you-

SANNARO

(Grins)

Happy?

VARANANI

Your face speaks volumes.

SANNARO

You know I’m now beyond the age I promised Uncle Devasru.

VARANANI

It doesn’t surprise me you became intimate with her as soon as the conditions were met. Happy Birthday, brother, even if it’s a little late!

Varanani kissed his cheek.

VARANANI (CONT.)

Uncle Devasru told me about the deplorable way the people of Regalis treated you during Tim Werner’s trial.

SANNARO

It was a terrible time I hope I’ll never have to relive, but I hope I convinced them to finally give up their resentment toward the Kumani.

VARANANI

You’re braver than me. I’m hungry. Do you want to join me? We can sit and talk.

SANNARO

Sounds good. Lead the way.

Sannaro swept his arm ahead of him and his sister took the lead.

She directed them to a small restaurant in the newer part of the city where they sat down at a table in the center of the dining room.

VARANANI

I heard the Kumani gave reparation to survivors because Belso started the fire.

SANNARO

Yes, reparation was given.

VARANANI

Did you get your cut?

SANNARO

Actually, it was absorbed by a contempt of court ruling so there was nothing for me to claim, but I don’t mind. I got over being angry at Belso long ago.

VARANANI

What a horrible time that must have been for you. I’m surprised that Tim Werner showed himself to be a vengeful person. He’d been nicer than most in school.

SANNARO

His father refused to get burn treatment for him so he was quite bitter. It didn’t help that his father was almost insane with getting back at the Kumani for the attack at Bristol. I saw Ken Togahashi. He’s now a surgeon who specializes in burn treatment. He had tried to convince Mr. Werner to allow Tim to have reconstructive surgery, but he refused.

VARANANI

Now, Ken was one of my friends. He liked hanging around with me and Adam Croner. I’m glad he chose to help the survivors instead of choosing to be angry.

SANNARO

How is Uncle Devasru, Aunt Tsekani, Briarko and Vanrero?

VARANANI

Uncle Devasru’s still working at the Saili consulate as Ambassador Eradano’s aide. Aunt Tsekani seems to be happy. She’s more relaxed with non-Saili now. Briarko’s working here in town and Vanrero’s attending the University too. What brings you back here?

SANNARO

We’re taking on supplies because the planet we’d planned to stop at was attacked.

VARANANI

It was you who found the invaders? The news was saying an Astrisi vessel found the mysterious aliens as they were fleeing!

SANNARO

Actually - I was the Team-leader for that sweep.

Varanani put her hands over her mouth.

VARANANI

Did you see one?

SANNARO

No, we only saw their ship leaving. It was too fast for us to pursue. We gave the ISP a report, but we’re continuing our set plans.

VARANANI

San, Ilbari is only a few parsecs away!

SANNARO

Vara, the ISP are alerted. I’m sure they’re watching. You’ll be safe.

VARANANI

I hope so.

Sannaro and Varanani shivered simultaneously and snapped their heads toward the front of the store.

Sannaro jumped from his seat and rushed out of the restaurant with Varanani and Cherna quickly following.

VARANANI

Sanna, don’t!

Sannaro continued his rush toward an alley where a man with red skin with blue hair shimmered into existence visibly poised in a fighting stance with a six-inch thin metal object with nine sharp points and two points intertwined in the center like fingers of a hand splayed out with the thumbs entwined.

Sannaro lined his sight to where the strange man was aimed. His eyes focused on the beige wispy alien with muddy brown fuzz on its wide large-eyed head and long arms ending with two tentacle-like fingers.

It wore a brown shift loosely covering a slender shapeless body with spindly legs covered with sandals wrapped around its two long tentacle toes. At the same time, it saw the red man and hissed.

The humanoid sent the sharp-fingered weapon spinning toward the hissing enemy.

It scurried out of the weapon’s path and out of sight.

The weapon smacked into a wall with a big explosion as fragments of mortar and brick flew everywhere.

The weapon spun back to the humanoid’s hand and almost invisibly holstered.

ALARIAN

I missed!

He ran after his enemy.

SANNARO

That’s the same feeling I sensed fighting the invaders!

CHERNA

The red man?

SANNARO

No, the other one the red man threw at!

Sannaro pursued the fleeing aliens.

SANNARO

But the red man’s weapon took down a wall in one blow! Doesn’t he care that he’s throwing through crowds of people? We need to make sure no one gets hurt!

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Sanna, slow down! I can’t keep up!

He heard her footfalls as she chased after them. He remembered she had no physical training like Cherna and he had. Still, he was ahead of Cherna as he rounded a corner and saw the red skin alien who had the tentacled alien trapped in a dead end.

POLICEMAN

Freeze!

Sannaro glanced back to see a human in uniform with his weapon out, standing behind Cherna and Varanani.

Varanani went as rigid as a dead Saili.

The policeman rushed around her toward Cherna, him and the two aliens.

Sannaro glanced back at the alien in time to see the humanoid hesitate for a second, but then with a flick of the wrist, he sent the ten-spiked weapon spinning again toward the hissing trapped creature.

With a loud crack, the tentacled alien was split in half.

The weapon spun back to its master.

Sannaro stood with his mouth agape, staring at the smoking corpse.

POLICEMAN

Put down the weapon and surrender.

ALRIAN

It’s time for Belvas to fight again.

The red man faded away.

The policeman fired his laser.

Sannaro dropped to the ground to avoid the volley.

It only discharged on the wall above the bisected alien corpse.

VARANANI

Great Forge!

SANNARO

Iachi'awei Ushi, they are real!

Sannaro said as he picked himself off the ground and wiped the dirt off his clothes.

POLICEMAN

What’re you Astrisi doing here?

SANNARO

I sensed the red alien right before he appeared in the alley across from the-

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

What’s the restaurant’s name?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Algail Eatery.

SANNARO

The Algail Eatery. He threw a thin blade weapon with ten spikes on it at the alien over there.

He gestured to the split corpse.

SANNARO (CONT.)

The blade weapon missed. The wielder caught it and pursued until he trapped that alien here. Then you saw the rest.

POLICEMAN

Why did you pursue?

SANNARO

An unknown alien runs through your city throwing a blade weapon that can bring down a whole wall! We pursue to insure no one gets hurt and all you think about is that we’re flaming Astrisi? If you hadn’t looked closely, officer, yellow skin, slanted eyes, ears that point two up, one down means Saili?

Varanani stepped around him to put herself between him and the policeman.

VARANANI

Sannaro, you’re insulting the man.

POLICEMAN

As a matter of fact, I did notice you’re Saili, but you’re accent's Astrisi! And who are you, Auruma?

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Oh he's courteous to you, but not to me!

VARANANI

I’m Auruma Varanani Damirateyak. The Astrisi/Saili is my brother Aurum Sannaro Damirateyak and the Astrisi woman is Cherna, both of the Kumani. They were visiting with me at the Algail Eatery when I too sensed the strange alien mind with violent intent toward that creature he mentally called a Zuran.

POLICEMAN

Why didn’t he say that?

VARANANI

He’s not as telepathically trained as I am.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Did you have to tell him that?

POLICEMAN

So did your brother pursue with intent to prevent other residents harm from the attacker?

SANANRO (PSI V.O.)

I wish I could rearrange this cop’s guts!

VARANANI

That was his and Cherna’s intent.

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Calm yourself, Sannaro.

POLICEMAN

Could you inform your temperamental brother and his friend they need to come with us to the Police Station to fill out a report?

VARANANI

You can ask him directly! Sannaro may be temperamental, but if you’re not challenging, he’ll listen and make his own choice.

The policeman gave Varanani a sour look, but still turned toward Sannaro.

POLICEMAN

Would both of you please come with me to the Police Station to make out incident reports?

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Why the hell should I?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Because it’s the right thing to do.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

He’s the one who ignored me!

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

If you hadn’t insulted the man in the first place, he wouldn’t have ignored you.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

He’s the one who insulted me first! Did you hear how he spit the word Astrisi?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

I did, but you still need to calm down and do the right thing. You pursued with intent to protect, so finish the job and get your temper in control, Sanna.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

I’m not Sanna anymore! I’m San!

SANNARO

We will.

He and Cherna took hands to follow the policeman and Varanani joined them.

EXT. BELVAS POLICE STATION - DAY

The policeman went to his computer and entered some information.

POLICEMAN

Wait, I have a missing persons report on you, Sannaro Damirateyak!

SANNARO

Well, that’s because I ran away from my Uncle to go back to the Astrisi.

POLICEMAN

The report says your twenty-one, you’re still underage. I’ll have to call your uncle.

SANNARO

Whatever.

POLICEMAN

Auruma, why didn’t you contact your uncle when you found him?

VARANANI

Someone tried to kill him. I encouraged him to go to keep him safe.

POLICEMAN

Well, there are no laws against conspiring to run away. But, if I were your uncle, I wouldn’t be happy about it.

SANNARO

While you’re calling our uncle, can I call my commander to report my situation?

POLICEMAN

Okay.

Sannaro excused himself, walked over to an unused corner and drew out his communicator. He wasn't going to quest out telepathically in a city with Saili in it to find Lazha's mind. It was easier just to use the communicator.

SANNARO

Sannaro to Lazha.

The tiny screen lit up with Lazha.

LAZHA

Lazha. San, where have you been? The whole city’s up in arms about two unknown aliens attacking each other.

SANNARO

I know.

LAZHA

Why does my dull non-telepathic intuition tell me you’re in the middle of the situation?

SANNARO

Years of association? Or maybe my telepathy’s wearing off on you?

LAZHA

Where are you?

SANNARO

You haven’t guessed? At the Police Station giving statements. Lazha, this is rachi, but is there any historical reference to what a Belvan looked like?

LAZHA

A Belvan? Belvans haven’t been seen since the war that almost destroyed the Astrisi, but did destroy three other cultures the Astrisi had relations with including the Gasbajans about two hundred years ago.

SANNARO

I remember making an essay on the subject of that war in the test I took to enter Astrisi school, but I never found anything to show what a Belvan looked like.

LAZHA

Why do you ask?

SANNARO

Before the red-skin man vanished, he said it was time for Belvas to fight again. Odder still, I’ve met the guy!

LAZHA

How?

SANNARO

Would you believe, in a fever dream two years ago when I was in my uncle’s custody?

LAZHA

When that mad scientist sociologist Verano tried to chemically wipe out your memory?

SANNARO

That’s right. I fought him and escaped before I completely dropped into confusion and ran to the old part of Algail where I hid in one of the green pyramid buildings. I saw two red guys bend over me. They talked, but I didn’t know what they said. Then the old red man left me with the young guy, the one I saw today. The elder came back and injected me with some stuff before they disappeared. I took off after that, not wanting to see those guys again. After I woke up in the hospital with the antidote Zhad helped to create, I thought everything I saw was a fever dream brought on by the mind-wiping serum. Now I’ve just seen that same guy bisect an unknown alien with precision Edat would’ve appreciated in a Siche master!

LAZHA

Ha'iko! I’ll get my tasra on the libraries right away. If anyone can find a reference for a description of a native Belvan, it’s Ki'el. As soon as you’re released, get back here. We’re packed up and ready to lift off.

SANNARO

Oh, there’s a problem with that. The human police have a missing persons report on me. They’re calling Uncle Devasru to come pick me up.

LAZHA

Fausa! Well, since Devasru allowed you to stay with us twice before, I hope he’ll let you run away again.

SANNARO

He probably will.

LAZHA

Come back when you can.

SANNARO

Houk.

Sannaro put the device away and leaned against the wall with a big sigh of frustration.

END ACT 1

ACT 2

INT. ALPHA CENTAURI CONSULATE, EARTH – DAY

Days later, Marc and Jim were chattering excitedly as they dressed in Marc's former bedroom at the Alpha Centauri consulate.

The door opened.

They turned around to see Zakoti standing at the door in his underwear with his tuxedo draped across his arm and a scowl on his face.

ZAKOTI

Marcayo, why are jhumani clothes so complicated? I cannot learn how to dress in this!

He threw the clothes on the bed.

Jim shot an amusing look toward Marc.

MARC

I'll help him dress.

JIM

Let's start with the pants.

Jim picked up that piece and handed it to Marc.

MARC

Zak, you are familiar with pants so you put them on.

He handed the garment to his full Brocana cousin, Marc had brought back with him from the undercover assignment Jim and he'd done on Centauri 7.

Zakoti reluctantly dressed himself in the pants.

JIM

Now the shirt.

Jim handed that garment off to Marc.

Marc passed it on.

MARC

You've worked with buttons since you came to Earth so next you put on your shirt.

ZAKOTI

I feel like baby here. I am not baby, Marcayo!

MARC

Of course you're not, Zak. You are just confused about the many layers of clothes here. Remember when Jim tried to put on a headscarf? He nearly choked himself with it.

ZAKOTI

I remember.

JIM

I did not choke myself! You just thought I put it on too tight.

MARC

Yeah, right. Jim, you do the bow tie and I'll do the cummerbund.

ZAKOTI

Cummerbund? Why do they call that cummerbund? It does not look like a vegetable or bread!

Jim dropped the tie and held onto the bed shaking with laughter.

Marc missed a fastening as he sputtered in an unsuccessful attempt to contain his own mirth.

MARC

The name does not have anything to do with food, Zak. It is a sash that is called a cummer-bundh.

ZAKOTI

It still makes no sense!

Jim approached him to tie the bow tie around his neck.

As Jim was adjusting the bow to assure it was straight, a knock sounded at the door.

Marc opened the door and Jonathan walked in.

JON

Are you boys almost ready?

MARC

We've been helping Zak dress. He was daunted by the complexity of a tuxedo.

JON

Tuxedos can be complicated, Zakoti. The women have been helping Lashanti and Brinika into their dresses as well so don't feel alone.

ZAKOTI

At least the women don't have to wear vegetables and bread!

Marc and Jim leaned on one another laughing.

MARC

I told you, a cummerbund has nothing to do with cucumbers and dinner rolls, Zakoti!

JON

Stop teasing Zakoti, Marcayo. Just call it a sash. You are wearing a sash, Zakoti, not any vegetables or bread. Now let's go.

They followed Marc's father out of the room and joined the bridesmaids in the living room.

JON (CONT.)

Now as we worked it yesterday, Jim is with Andrea. You're looking nice, Peter. You’re with Major Sita.

SITA

Diane for today.

The dark woman smiled as she stood beside the blond, tall patrolman.

JON

George and Brittony, then Commander Patterson with Barbara.

PATTERSON

Also Dan for the day, Mr. Daniels.

Then Zakoti with Lashanti.

ZAKOTI

You look beautiful, Lashanti!

LAZHANTI

You are very, what is they say? Oh, handsome, my man!

Marc grinned as his father led him out of the house, through the sidewalk arched with multicolored flowers to the gazebo where the minister was waiting.

Marc took his place at the left while his father sat down beside his mother who was already holding a handkerchief.

Brinika was seated beside his mother looking nervous and excited.

The music began to play as soon as Zakoti and Lashanti walked down the steps of the porch followed by Dan and Barbara, George and Brittony, Pete and Diane, and then Jim and Andrea.

When they were at their places in front of the gazebo, the organist changed to the

Wedding March and June Castillas came out with Amber.

Marc's heart skipped a beat before it began to race.

Amber was glorious in white silk, lace and pearls. Her bodice was criss-crossed tightly across her slender waist, accentuating her baby doll cut collar that showed a modest amount of brown-skin cleavage. Her face was covered by a veil of lace and pearls and her train swept behind her several feet.

Jim laid a casual hand on Marc's back as he began to sway.

JIM

Easy does it, partner. Breathe.

Marc glanced at Jim for a second and gulped before he returned to his eyes to his bride who sashayed up to his side.

He turned to the minister, but found himself stealing glimpses of her.

A smile showed through her veil as she looked at him.

MINISTER

Dearly Beloved, we are here today to see the joining of this man and woman in holy matrimony. Amber Maria Castillas, do you take this man as your lawfully wedded Husband, in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, until death do you part?

AMBER

I do.

Amber took the ring from her friend Andrea and slipped it onto Marc's fourth finger.

MINISTER

Marcayo Antoku Daniels, do you take this woman as your lawfully wedded Wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, until death do you part?

MARC

I do.

Marc took the ring from Jim and slipped it onto her fourth finger.

MINISTER

Is there any objection to why this man and woman should wed, speak now or forever hold your peace.

(BEAT)

As one man has made, let none tear it asunder. By the power invested in me by the Council of the Terran Alliance of Planets, I declare you Husband and Wife. You may kiss the bride.

Marc's normally steady fingers trembled slightly as he raised her veil over her head, took her in his arms and kissed her passionately.

The assembly cheered.

Marc and Amber turned around and walked down the aisle together in a shower of rice as the music drifted through the air with the heady scent of the flowers.

When they reached the stairs to the porch, Amber bent down and tossed her bouquet over her head.

Marc laughed as he bounced away to avoid her arms.

She turned around to see her friend Andrea with her face red and the bouquet upended in her hands.

AMBER

Oh, Andrea! You're next!

A new band took the place of the organist to play casual music as the buffet table was uncovered around the base of the fountain of frolicking mermaids now draped in flower garlands for the reception.

Marc and Amber were served first, then the wedding party and, lastly, the guests.

After they ate, Speaker Bell rose from his chair.

BELL

Well, since I am the Speaker of the Council, I guess I'll be first to toast the new couple. Marc and Amber, may you have a long prosperous life together!

CROWD

Here, here!

The guests drank.

Jim stood up next.

JIM

Hey, partner, you've taken me to some wild places!

The Patrolmen and women laughed, especially Malia Meyers.

JIM (CONT.)

I know you love to ride Sinvatis as much as the next Brocana, but don't forget your other woman!

(OC) As if the tall, wide, long-necked Sinvati understood she was being talked about, Hikiya brayed in her stall farther out from the house.

MARC

Hush, Hikiya!

JIM

Seriously, I hope you’ll have a happy life together, especially so Marc can eat more than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch on our deep-space patrols! I warn you, he's a terrible cook!

PATROL OFFICERS

Here, here!

He got laughs and claps on that one.

Jim scratched his head.

JIM

Oh, I was trying to propose a toast! May you be partnered longer than Marc and me!

PATROL OFFICERS

Here, here!

Dan Patterson stood up.

PATTERSON

Marc was quite a guy when I first met him. His reserve covered a shocking intensity. He was shy, but bold and always conscious of himself and those around him. It didn't prepare me for the dynamic pilot and dedicated Policeman he was inside a space cruiser. I guess it's because Marc lives in two worlds, that of the son of a successful diplomat-

Dan swept his glass toward Jonathan Daniels.

PATTERSON (CONT.)

As well as the wild powerful world of the Brocana.

He tipped his glass toward Candora.

PATTERSON (CONT.)

Surprisingly, he’s made a balance between worlds that makes him such a powerful patrolman. Shortly after Marc came to me, he said he met an intriguing woman in a restaurant on the space station after one of their interrupted, violent lunchtime arrests. Frequently after that, we were regaled with the wonderful times they had together. I'm glad Marc and Amber decided to formalize their union and I hope we can be regaled with many other stories of happy times!

CROWD

Here, here!

Zerbeck Matauni stood.

ZERBECK

I always thought Marcayo could be a good Zetori. We of Zeta Minor are very soldierly. Marc is a hearty strong-willed young man with a desire to complete what he starts. What we see here is another aspect of that desire for completion. May Amber always be a part of that which makes Marcayo complete.

CROWD

Here, here!

Diane Sita stood.

SITA

My turn! Amber’s a great Traffic Controller. I've enjoyed working with her through the years. We’ve also been regaled with stories of happy times although sometimes Amber would come in steaming and telling us not to mention his name, but she has always loved him. I warn you, Marc, you better learn Spanish so you can understand Amber when she's cussing!

MARC

I already have a jump on it!

SITA

You two make a great couple. May you stay that way for a good long time!

CROWD

Here, here!

Zakoti stood up tentatively.

ZAKOTI

I do it?

MARC

Be my guest!

ZAKOTI

I am not good with Basic so bear with me. I am Brocana. Marc is Harak, first born male and family leader. When he went to Bamasha, uh -

MARC

Alpha Centauri 7.

ZAKOTI

Yes, Alpha Centauri 7 to find Jabayu's killer, I said bad about Marc taking Harak. I said mean words to you, Marcayo. I am sorry. Marcayo did not keep me from Jhumani ways. He let me see more than I have dreamed. Marcayo stayed loyal to Amber even when Amber was mad at him. Because of his loyal to Amber, he showed Lashanti my love. I am always grateful to you, Marcayo. May your loyal to Amber burn as long as the sun above you.

CROWD

Here, here!

Andrea jumped up.

ANDREA

I remember that! Amber, you were so mad at Marc for taking that undercover assignment and swore you didn't want to see his face again, but we Traffic Controllers noticed the longer he was gone the more you missed him. When he finally called you to tell you he was on his way home, you came to work just gushing about his return. You couldn't wait to greet him home. I think that's when you finally realized how much you love that guy.

Amber blushed toward Marc.

Marc brushed her cheek with his hand.

ANDREA (CONT.)

Don't ever forget that even when Marc's job demands his absence sometimes, he's a great guy and worth the wait.

CROWD

Here, here!

Marc took Amber's face, turned it toward him and he kissed her for over a minute.

GEORGE

Dang, let her breathe, Marc!

AMBER

Who wants to when I have him?

Amber returned the kiss.

MARC

Whoa, this is better than a space plane obstacle course!

WANHOCHI

Oh, the highest compliment. Marc loves space-plane competitions!

MARC

I'm glad you like my consistency, Captain!

AMBER

You men just can't stop talking about sports. I want to dance!

ANDREA

Yeah, Marc, take her on her first dance!

Marc laughed nervously, then stood up and offered his arm to Amber.

She took it and stood.

They moved over to the dancing square.

The music began.

Marc happily enveloped her in his arms for the formal first dance.

MARC

This is going well. I couldn't be happier.

AMBER

Wake me, I must be dreaming!

MARC

Oh, I'll wake you for sure! You won't sleep a minute tonight.

AMBER

You naughty rascal!

MARC

How naughty do you want me to be?

AMBER

Marcayo, we're in front of a dozen dignitaries from dozens of worlds as well as your boss and mine!

MARC

Don't worry, they don't have a clue. I'm an old hat at pretending. To them it just looks like we're talking happily as we go along the floor. It's when we get home that you'll have to worry!

AMBER

Who's worried?

She snuggled her head in his chest.

As Marc swayed with the music and reveled in the touch of her head on his chest, a feeling of contentment overcame him.

The music ended and Marc swept Amber up in another kiss while the guests clapped.

They sat down to allow a public dance.

As the sun began to set, torches were lit around the dance floor, but Marc was drawn to the stars above them.

Amber snuggled up to him.

AMBER

What are you thinking about, Marc?

MARC

Someday I should take you to Centauri 7. Do you know the nights are completely different on Centauri 7 than they are here on Earth? There’s no moon, but the stars are so strikingly bright, they nearly look like a thousand moons shining down on us, especially out on the Brocana lands where there are no street lights.

AMBER

How romantic!

MARC

To you, the night would be so warm and dry.

AMBER

You should take me there sometime.

MARC

We can ride Hikiya out to an empty hill as Balda's setting and Aldumu's bidding farewell to the world. We can eat our dinner while we sit on a blanket covering the grass on that hilltop and bid Aldumu good night. Then we can spend all night watching the stars and being together, surrounded by the sweet scent of the nocturnal star flowers.

AMBER

What a beautiful thought. We should do that after you return, Marc.

MARC

Let's ask to take our leave so we can go home. Let them continue their celebration, but I have another celebration in mind.

AMBER

My, are you eager!

MARC

Eager only for you, my love.

He teased her ear with his nose before he stood up and they went in search of Marc's father.

MARC

Father, Amber and I’d like to bid everyone a good night. We’re ready to turn in.

JON

All right, Marc. I wondered how long the two of you’d last here.

He moved up to the band and asked for a microphone.

JON

Honored guests, Marc and Amber are asking to take their leave, but ask that you stay and celebrate further of their union.

Marc took the microphone.

MARC

Thank you for such a wonderful evening. Amber and I’ll never forget this wonderful day. We bid you good night!

He handed the microphone back to the bandleader and guests followed Marc and Amber to Marc's flier.

INT. MARC'S HOUSE(ARIZONA, EARTH) -DAY

The next morning, Marc watched Amber sit on their bed in her BST uniform as he packed his bags.

MARC

Last night was glorious. I’ll never forget it. I promise when I get back, we'll have that starry night on a Centauri hill like we talked about last night, just you, me and my Sinvati.

AMBER

Come back in one piece, okay?

MARC

Okay.

He took her chin, raised it up to his lips and kissed her.

After a few minutes, he released her, stood up and closed his luggage.

MARC

I'll call you from every port. A copy of the itinerary’s in the computer. I don't think you'll need to remind Zakoti to go to the Consulate to take care of Hikiya each day, but just remember he needs to do that. Lashanti should be able to cook the food for her and Zak when you're at work as long as you put the food out and make sure she knows the directions. Watch carefully when Lashanti does the laundry. She tends to put in too much laundry soap. Maybe she'll take suggestions from you better because you’re a woman. She gets snappy with me because it's not a man's work.

AMBER

Marc, I'll be fine.

MARC

Zak might get a bit miffed to have to take orders from a woman, but I think he understands the situation. He told me he’d accept you as the leader of the family for the time being. If he still causes you trouble, call my mother. She'll talk with Zak.

AMBER

Marcayo Antoku Daniels, I’ll take care of everything! Stop worrying!

Marc blushed at the speaking of his whole name and stopped.

She stood up and draped her arms around his shoulders.

AMBER

I promise I’ll take care of your Harak, dear heart. The laundry will still be intact. Your favorite mount will be happy and fat and so will your cousin! Now go get this mission over with!

She kissed him again.

He melted against her.

MARC

Oh I wish there was time for one more chance to share your bed.

She touched his lips with a finger.

AMBER

But there's not. You need to go.

He kissed it.

She turned around, picked up his luggage, then handed them to him and pushed him toward the door. She continued to lead him out to the flier.

He put his luggage in the back seat then climbed in beside her.

She flew out toward the Houston Spaceport. She parked the flier at Marc's assigned parking space, walked with him to the private ship hangar building, then went into the hangar where Marc's father's Ambassadorial spaceship the Namura rested.

It was three stories high with delta wings attached to the top of the hull above an observation lounge that dotted the top of the ship with window ports. It was silver with the emblem of Alpha Centauri painted on its sides of the two sheep-like klevies with the tall, wide-backed, long-necked, light brown Sinvati arching above them with the gold banner held in the klevies' teeth showing the words "We Will Endure." Behind them were two suns in a light-blue sky.

Jon and Jim were already at the ramp awaiting him.

She kissed him.

AMBER

See you later. I need to get myself up to the space station so I can go to work.

MARC

I love you, Amber. I hope I won't be gone long.

AMBER

I know, sweetheart. Go now.

She pushed him toward the spaceship.

He reluctantly walked to the ramp.

When he turned around, she was gone. He sighed then followed his father and Jim up the ramp.

Jim laid a sympathetic hand on his friend's shoulder.

JIM

You'll see her again.

MARC

The night was too short!

JIM

I know, buddy, I know.

Marc took his luggage to his room, then joined Jim, his father, and Zerbeck Matauni in the control room.

MARC

Hi, Uncle Mat.

ZERBECK

Hello, Marcayo. Your wedding was glorious. Can we expect a few yawns today?

MARC

Uncle Matauni!

JON

Stop teasing the boy, Zerbeck! We need him to fly.

ZERBECK

I couldn't resist a little ribbing.

Marc sat down in the pilot's seat and pulled on his headset. He began a pre-check on the systems then started the engines. He called to the tower to report they were ready to launch.

He taxied the ship to runway eight then he was told to stand by.

Several minutes later, his earphones turned on again and he was told he was clear to launch.

He rolled the Namura down the runway and pulled her off the ground, then added more power as they climbed into the sky until they were at escape velocity.

MARC

AC Namura to BST, over.

AMBER (V.O.)

BST, AC Namura, over.

MARC

BST, AC Namura, requesting clearance to Alpha Centauri Seven, over. And wishing you could come too.

AMBER (V.O.)

Roger, AC Namura, you are cleared for coordinates 456278.5, do you copy?

MARC

Roger, BST, coordinates 456278.5. Me amo tu, over.

AMBER (V.O.)

Roger, me amo tu, tambien. Have a safe flight, AC Namura, BST, out.

JIM

Amber! I didn't think she had the time to get to work, already.

MARC

I think she did that deliberately. She wanted to say good bye while she was doing her job.

JIM

Marc, we're approaching Mars.

Marc nodded. He entered the coordinates and prepared the main thrusters.

MARC

I'm engaging trans-light engines.

EXT. SPACE

AC Namura jumped into hyperspace.

END ACT 2

ACT 3

INT. BELVAS POLICE STATION - DAY

Uncle Devasru entered with Ambassador Eradano, his uncle’s employer.

Sannaro returned to Varanani and Cherna just as Devasru and Eradano reached them.

ERADANO

I want to know everything.

MONTAGE OF RED MAN KILLING THE ZURAN

The elder Saili’s frown deepened as the story progressed.

ERADANO

The Belvans have returned.

DEVASRU

That’s not a good sign.

SANNARO

Could you please explain why this is bad? Are the red people Belvans? Why didn’t you know this three years ago?

DEVASRU

Sannaro, slow down.

ERADANO

Three years ago when you'd spoken about red people in green buildings, I asked for the Saili archives be searched for people with red skin. It was discovered that the native Belvans did have red skin. Till now we couldn’t fathom why you saw two of them while you were in a delusional state.

ERADANO (PSI V.O.)

I don’t like to be interrogated, young man.

VARANANI

Where are they hiding?

VARANANI (PSI V.O.)

Ambassador, Sannaro’s just concerned with this invasion. He only wants to understand the horror he saw on Ilbari.

DEVASRU

If we knew, the mystery of their disappearance would be answered. Before now, we thought as the Astrisi did - that the Belvans were destroyed by the invaders.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

You saw that?

SANNARO

Are there any records in the Saili archives that show what the invaders looked like? What did they call themselves?

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

My team did the sweep of that planet.

EERADANO

Those are all valid questions, Sannaro. However, no one learned what they called themselves. Nor did the records show how they looked.

SANNARO

Oh, that’s right, the Saili ran home with their tails between their legs, leaving the Astrisi to fight the war alone!

ERADANO

We’re finished here, Devasru.

ERADANO (PSI V.O.)

I will not continue to be insulted by this impudent teenager.

Eradano walked toward the door.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

I’m twenty-one now!

ERADANO (PSI V.O.)

Saili teen years, our Putura, doesn’t end until twenty-four and six months, Human standard, boy.

Devasru glared at Sannaro.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

That last remark was uncalled for, young man.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

It’s the truth.

POLICEMAN

Aurum Devasru, this young man admits he ran away from you to return to the Astrisi. What do you want to do?

DEVASRU

I’ll take him home, Officer. Thank you for calling me.

POLICEMAN

You’re not pressing charges on the Astrisi for harboring him?

DEVASRU

While I don’t condone him running away, I can’t condemn him for wanting to run from a murder attempt on his life. I don’t want to punish the Astrisi for keeping my nephew safe.

POLICEMAN

Then there’s nothing more for me to do. How about the Astrisi girl?

DEVASRU

I know her. She’s a friend of my nephew. She can go her own way.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

Come, children.

SANNARO (PSI V.O.)

Are you going to keep me here on Belvas?

DEVARSU (PSI V.O.)

Sannaro, I allowed you to stay with the Astrisi. I don’t want to back down on that now. I’m just doing what the humans expect me to do. Once we’re away from the police station, you can go your own way.

POLICEMAN

You’re free to go. Congratulations on finding your nephew again, Aurum.

DEVASRU

Thank you.

They exited the same door.

Cherna put her hands on her hips.

CHERNA

Why do I feel like I only got half of the conversation?

VARANANI

Because you did.

DEVASRU

I’m sorry, Cherna. It’s just so natural for Saili to discuss details telepathically; we didn’t even think to enter you into the telepathic conversation. Now, I really need to rejoin Ambassador Eradano. I’m not done at the office.

SANNARO

We can hail a cab to go back to the spaceport.

They walked out into the streets.

VARANANI

I can take you in my flier.

SANNARO

You want to come with me? Vara, I’ve told you before that living on a spaceship is as dangerous as going out to defend it!

VARANANI

I know, San, but I think I’d feel safer being guarded by fighters like you!I feel so vulnerable knowing there are unknown beings attacking rim worlds! I’m an adult now. I can go where I want to. Please, take me with you, San!

CHERNA

They are scary, San. What if that being was one of them? That would mean they’re here on Belvas. Can you really be comfortable knowing that Varanani’s here with the invaders searching for Belvans?

SANNARO

The Saili will run home and hide. She’ll be safe on Sailia.

VARANANI

I’m serious. I want to go with you!

SANNARO

What'll you tell Uncle Devasru? What about your studies at the University?

VARANANI

Is my little brother lecturing me on spontaneous decisions?

SANNARO

I just think you haven’t thought this through enough!

Varanani snickered.

SANNARO

I do have a right to council my older sister when I think her judgment isn’t sound!

VARANANI

Oh, Sannaro, I’m sorry for angering you, but it’s so cute to see my youngest brother counseling me! But, seriously, I haven’t been living with Uncle Devasru for the last year. Since you left two years ago, things haven’t been the same between me and Uncle Devasru. He’s become more remote now that he realizes I was just acting like a proper Saili to please him.

SANNARO

I’m sorry.

VARANANI

So am I. He feels like he failed us both. I can’t seem to get through to him that I’ll be forever grateful he took me in after I thought everyone had died on Regalis. I want to be with you now, San. Can’t you allow that? Or does it have to do with the laws of the Astrisi?

SANNARO

I’d have to appeal to the council. Let me ask Lazha and Parik.

Sannaro whipped out his communicator.

SANNARO

Sannaro to Lazha.

LAZHA

Lazha. What’s up now, San? Did Devasru let you go?

SANNARO

Yes, he did. My sister Varanani wants to join me on board for this crisis.

LAZHA

Have you talked with your Uncle?

SANNARO

Varanani says she hasn’t lived with Uncle Devasru for a year and she’s being emphatic about her request.

LAZHA

Could you clear it with Devasru first? Then if he has no problems with it, you can call Parik.

SANNARO

I’ll do that.

He cut the line.

Varanani sighed and dropped her shoulders.

VARANANI

All right, we can go talk to Uncle Devasru.

SANNARO

Let’s go.

Varanani walked them to her flier and she drove them to the Saili consulate.

INT. SAILI CONSULATE – DAY

The receptionist nodded at Varanani as she walked down the hall to their Uncle’s office and walked in.

DEVASRU

I’m surprised to see you so soon after you enraged Ambassador

Eradano

SANNARO

It was unexpected.

DEVASRU

I’ve just finished reading the reports you filed with the ISP about the conditions at Ilbari. It must have been a grisly sight.

SANNARO

It was terrible.

DEVASRU

Cherna, how are you?

CHERNA

I am well, Uncle Devasru.

DEVASRU

I hope you understand that Eradano is my employer. I had to go with him, but I’m glad you came to visit me.

CHERNA

I understand. I just wish someone would've linked with me so I could hear the whole conversation.

VARANANI

Uncle, I must ask you something.

DEVASRU

I knew this day was going to happen. You want to go with your brother.

VARANANI

I tried, Uncle! I still want to finish my college, but I want to be with San during this crisis. I feel uneasy here.

DEVASRU

I’ve known how you felt. Varanani, do you really feel unsafe with us?

VARANANI

I’m a Deviant, although not as much as Sannaro. I see now the Saili see us as threat to their culture. Until I can assume my work in Social Sciences, I’m a target for those like Verano. If the Saili pull back to Sailia like they've done in past wars, I won’t go with them so I’d rather be with Sannaro.

DEVASRU

You are making some sense. Eradano’s speaking with the Council on Sailia about doing just that. Returning to Sailia would put you at risk. You may ask the Astrisi to allow you on board.

Varanani hugged him.

VARANANI

Thank you, Uncle.

Sannaro took his communicator off his belt.

SANNARO

Sannaro to Kumani.

Di'ok appeared on the small screen.

DI'OK

Kumani.

SANNARO

Di, put me to Parik, please.

DI'OK

Parik? What goes, brother?

SANNARO

I can’t bind up the board that long, brother. Put me to Parik.

DI'OK

Okay, on the grounds that right when you plant your feet on the flight deck, you owe me the story!

SANNARO

You’ve got it, Di.

DI'OK

Switching.

The screen went black.

The little screen was taken over by an older man with graying brown hair.

PARIK

Parik.

SANNARO

Parik, I have another request to the council.

PARIK

Again? Now what?

SANNARO

My sister Varanani wants to join the Kumani for the duration of this crisis.

PARIK

Will this take any Saili court proceedings?

SANNARO

Nui, she is the age of adulthood.

PARIK

That greatly simplifies the situation. I’ll consult the other seniors and return with an answer shortly.

SANNARO

Fa’arata, Parik.

Sannaro (cont.)

Until Parik gives his decision, why don’t we go to your apartment and help you pack up?

Sannaro put the communicator away.

VARANANI

That would be good.

CHERNA

And we could catch up on each other from the last visit since the battle interrupted our visit.

VARANANI

No running this time?

CHERNA

I’ve stopped running, Varanani. I have no reason to with Sannaro.

DEVASRU (PSI V.O.)

Young love, always invigorating.

Sannaro blushed.

Varanani kissed her uncle lightly on his cheek.

VARANANI

I’ll see you again, Uncle Devasru.

DEVASRU

Of course, dear child, you have your fierce brother to watch over you!

Varanani led Sannaro and Cherna back to her flier and she drove to her modest small apartment.

They had just entered when Sannaro’s communicator beeped again. Sannaro pulled it out and turned it on.

SANNARO

Sannaro.

PARIK

Parik, Sannaro. The council has approved your request. Another shuttle’s landing at the Spaceport with crates for her belongings. Adara’s with them because she wanted to help. Would you call them to tell them where you are?

SANNARO

Houk, Parik. The stevedores can do this in no time. I'll call them as soon as I’m off with you.

PARIK

Good. Parik, out.

SANNARO

Sannaro, out.

He cut the line.

SANNARO

You're going, Vara!

Varanani grabbed Sannaro in a tight hug.

SANNARO

Sannaro to Adara.

ADARA

Adara.

SANNARO

I’m calling to tell you where to bring the steves.

ADARA

Houk, I think it’s wonderful! Welcome to the Kumani, Varanani!

VARANANI

Thank you, Adara, My apartment is 2346 Kelvar Lane, Apartment #212.

ADARA

I’ll pass it along. See you in a few minutes.

Five minutes later, a medium size flier van stopped in front of her building.

About six men and women jumped out of the back leading crates on hover-dollies up the stairs.

Varanani opened the door for them.

They quickly began to pack up her apartment.

VARANANI

They’re quick.

SANNARO

They’re stevedores. They’re trained to do this stuff. They take care of the cargo we’re commissioned to carry for clients as well as maintaining our ships stores. I’m sure you’ll need to inform your landlord you’re moving out.

VARANANI

That’s right, I do.

SANNARO

Then let’s go there and tell them now.

Varanani led Sannaro to the office.

VARANANI

I’m moving out, Kererto.

KERERTO

We’ll miss you, Varanani. Where are you going?

VARANANI

Off-world.

KERERTO

I’m not surprised. With these attacks, many people are leaving. Do you have a forwarding address I can send your mail to?

VARANANI

Have it sent to my Uncle’s house. He’ll get it to me.

KERERTO

This is sudden, Varanani. You understand I’ll have to keep your deposit since you gave no forewarning?

VARANANI

That’s fine.

SANNARO

It’s going to be in good shape when she clears out. She’s got a whole packing crew to do the cleaning.

KERERTO

I’ll inspect it when you’re finished.

They left the office.

With Varanani’s flier locked snugly on the top of the van, Sannaro drove with Adara, Cherna and Varanani crowded on the bench beside him while the stevedores were content to settle in the back with the boxes.

VARANANI

Will they be okay back there?

SANNARO

They’re use to being in cargo holds. It’s their job. They’re not even concerned about it.

A short while later, they entered the spaceport cargo gate and drove up to the shuttle.

Hadah waved at them as Sannaro turned off the van and the stevedores went to work again.

HADAH

San, I’m going to pilot your shuttle and you can pilot this one.

SANNARO

How about Tisa?

HADAH

I’ll take her as my copilot. Filp says you can use Cherna since her shuttle was already taken up. Are you up to it, Cheri?

CHERNA

I always like to fly with my tasra!

She wiggled flirtatiously toward Sannaro. Sannaro blushed.

HADAH (PSI V.O.)

New love!

Varanani broke out in giggles.

Sannaro shot her an exasperated look.

VARANANI

I’ll take my flier to the temporary parking so Uncle Devasru can drive it to his house for safe keeping.

SANNARO

Okay, we’ll be prepping the shuttle.

The stevedore unlock the flier and fly it down to the ground.

Varanani took over and flew it out of the airfield.

The rear hatch was closed up and everyone else entered the shuttle.

Sannaro and Cherna sat in the pilots chairs and went through the proper procedures for takeoff.

A few minutes later, Sannaro saw through the front window that Varanani had exited the spaceport’s main terminal and was walking toward the shuttle in confident strides.

As soon as she walked up the ramp, Sannaro pressed the hatch button so the ramp slipped into the undercarriage and the hatch closed and locked.

SANNARO

Cherna, let’s get this shuttle off the ground.

INT. SHUTTLE – SPACE

When they were in view of the Kumani, they felt a tremendous jolt.

SANNARO

What was that, Cheri? Check peripheral sensors. It felt like it came from outside. Our inner sensors show nothing.

CHERNA

San, nine o'clock high is an odd unidentified shuttle craft. It’s releasing a laser blast.

SANNARO

Okay, that’s our problem. Everyone, get into your safety straps.

Adara was out of her chair and was showing Varanani how to use her straps.

SANNARO

Hurry, Adara!

Adara jumped back into her chair and strapped herself in just as Sannaro tried to evade a volley that still impacted the shuttle.

The shuttle lurched violently.

Cherna yelped as panel beside her blew. She grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the fire out. She gasped and held her blistering arms away from the cooling panel.

CHERNA

That was our navigation computer.

SANNARO

Don’t worry, I’ll do it manually. Commencing defensive maneuvers.

He piloted the shuttle skillfully and scored some fire blasts on the attacking ship.

Cherna

San, divert to starboard! Here comes a heavy blast!

SANNARO

I can’t go port and starboard at the same time!

Sannaro pitched the nose down just before the shuttle wracked with an explosion.

Varanani screamed.

ADARA

San, Varanani was hurt by flying debris! Take it easy, Vara.

VARANANI

Adara?

ADARA

It will be all right. Sannaro will get us to safety and then Zhad can heal your injuries.

Sannaro saw white dots appear above and below the Kumani.

SANNARO

Ha'iko! The Vizha'i are launching! Let’s get this shuttle in, Cheri.

CHERNA

Houk!

Sannaro guided the shuttle into the hanger by sight and landed the shuttle shakily to the floor.

When they were lowered to the maintenance bay and taxied into the parking area, Zhad and Danu ran out to meet the shuttle. They entered together with Zhad going to the front while Danu checked the passengers.

ZHAD

Are you two all right?

Cherna held up her blistered forearms.

CHERNA

My arms are burned from the nav-computer blowing.

DANU

Zhad, I need help back here. Varanani's injured as well as some stevedores.

Zhad pulled out the communicator at his belt.

ZHAD

Zhad to Hospital. I need more medical personnel, stat. Bring multiple gurneys and a burn kit.

He returned the device to his belt.

ZHAD

Adara are you hurt?

ADARA

Nui, Zhad, I’ve had plenty of practice dodging debris.

ZHAD

All right, let’s prep Varanani for immediate movement, Danu.

TILA entered the shuttle.

ZHAD

Tila, wrap Cherna’s arms. She has first and second degree burns up her arms.

Sannaro sat at the pilots controls, torn about whether he was going to go with his wife or his sister.

As soon as the medical teams had left with the injured, Adara put her arms around Sannaro’s shoulders.

At first he didn’t respond because he was lost in thought, but he finally sighed and

laid his head against her arm.

SANNARO

Some hotshot pilot I am! In Varanani’s second flight with me, I managed to injure her and burn my tasra.

ADARA

You got us back in one piece. The fighting was fierce out there, but you got us back. Because of you, they’re only injured and not dead.

Hadah entered the shuttle.

HADAH

Is Sannaro okay?

SANNARO

I’m okay.

HADAH

We need your team to fly. Battle’s getting hotter.

Sannaro stood up.

SANNARO

Houk.

HADAH

How is Cherna?

SANNARO

She’s got first and second degree burns on her arms.

HADAH

Fausa, I’m short a pilot! Tisa and No'al are already prepping their Vizha'i and Arcas is standing by for you.

SANNARO

Houk.

Sannaro ran to the flight lounge and ran up the stairs. He rushed into his office with his sweatshirt already off. He sat down, pulled off his boots and swept off his pants. He quickly pulled on his flight-suit, strapped his air tank to his back, jammed his feet into his red boots, buckled his pistol belt around his waist and thigh, tied his red team-leader sash around his waist and grabbed his helmet from his locker. He ran down the stairs and onto the flight line to his team's waiting Vizha'i.

FADE OUT.

THE END.

She looked up into his eyes and he felt her beginning to merge with his mind.
